In case anybody wonders what happens to the garden once veggie-growing season is over, your question will be answered on:
WINTERIZE THE GARDEN DAY!
Saturday November 2 from 10 am to 12 noon
We'll take down what's left in the beds, sprinkle bone meal and other nutrients in the soil, do some planting for spring, turn compost, shift that dirt pile....good stuff!
Here are two garden residents we'll move in:
Notice how we parked these blueberry bushes by the strawberry plants, in front, near the sunflowers. It's a lovely spot, lots of sun, but curiously, no strawberries fruited here this year. Maybe they're still getting used to the place. I hope by next summer, they feel more comfortable and give us a bumper berry crop.
Showing more enthusiasm than the strawberries, the tomatoes have continued to pop out all over in the mild, sunny weather. Teachers and staff enjoy a taste of their deliciousness from this bowl in the staff room, along with other garden greens.
The basil did not make it to the staff-room fridge this week, but there's hope for next week:
Rumor has it some basil even found its way into salads for students at lunch. With luck, soon some tomatoes will, too. Now check out these little beauties - our first! - if you want to see cute.
Fun fact: Australians slice beets and put them on hamburgers, along with a fried egg.
