Hi everybody. The garden was great this week, as usual. Reminder: next Saturday, November 2, from 10 am to 12 noon, it’s WINTERIZE THE GARDEN DAY!
Bring a power drill because in case you haven't noticed, the shed door has fallen off. A few wood screws and some TLC and the shed will be as good as new.
It's sad to think of our plot surrendering the last of its vegetables over the next few weeks, but seasons change and so do gardens. Last week's warm weather brought a windfall:
Yes, we harvested the eggplants, which had started to rot on the stalk. Give a shout if you want one. As you can see we also have 2 more beets, a few carrots, and the most incredible strawberry.
After I picked the strawberry, I decided it was so awesome that I should save it for a worthy cause. And there it sat in the fridge, washed and waiting on a fresh paper towel for me to bring into the faculty room or mail to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which who won the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
Then my son came home from middle school. I opened the fridge. "Hey, get a load of this strawberry." And I gave it to him. He was amazed that it had grown in our very own school garden and said it was the best strawberry he had ever tasted - the perfect mix of tart and sweet. We'll have to take his word for it I guess.
Take my word for it, the spinach will challenge the most stubborn anti-vegetable kids to change their mind.
Does rosemary come back every year? I hope so. I mean, look at it. Amazing. You can use it fresh or wash and bundle it in a paper towel and stick it in a dim corner of a cupboard to hibernate till winter when you feel like spiking roast tomatoes with some summer dazzle.
The thyme's also looking good and dries well. Please come over and pick some.
And see what else is growing in time for Halloween.
The harvest we should celebrate most though, are these guys, who had been the backbone of the garden throughout the mellow season. On the north side they've finally died off, but on the south side they're going strong. Fabulous.
I’m still getting over that strawberry. Here’s to a few more ripening by next Saturday for you guys to enjoy while sprinkling bone meal in the beds.
